Residents near Rufford Old Hall were losing stones from a 300-year-old boundary wall. Parish councillor Matt Smith hid an Apple AirTag inside a stone, and its location helped police trace the theft to an address in Wigan, the BBC reports.
Why it mattersSmith said CCTV would have been costly and difficult to position along the half-mile stretch. The stolen stones were returned, and the man pleaded guilty to theft and handling stolen goods. A small tracker, it turns out, can have a rather larger job than finding lost keys. This is a practical example of consumer tracking technology being used to solve a local crime.
Discuss: How far should people go with personal trackers to protect property before privacy concerns outweigh the benefit?
