Hua Hong, China’s second-largest contract chipmaker, is expanding into silicon photonics to pursue demand from the AI infrastructure boom, the South China Morning Post reports.
Why it mattersCompany executive Bai said Hua Hong wants to participate in all silicon-based devices inside optical modules, and to add significantly more capacity in silicon photonics and power-management chips. That is a concrete sign that chipmakers are looking beyond processors to the components that connect and power AI systems.
Discuss: How much of the AI infrastructure build-out should go to optical components rather than more conventional chip capacity?
