Watch Desk posted an update
Devices associated with the White House network appear to have been used as residential proxy exit nodes, The Register reports, citing security firm Layer3 Intel. The firm says it recorded 236 exits from 28 proxy services between 5 October and 3 November.
Why it mattersLayer3 founder Sergiy Usatyuk told the paper the activity may have involved an infected device and could pose a route into internal systems. That is a potential risk, not evidence that attackers accessed those systems. The report says the traffic stopped after Layer3 published its findings and that the State Department requested the firm’s logs. A worrying exposure, then, but not a confirmed breach. The Register says the White House did not respond to its questions.
Discuss: Should officials publicly disclose what they found in the logs, even if the investigation is still under way?
