Watch Desk posted an update

Airbnb says it plans to launch an AI travel agent in the first half of 2027. The agent is meant to help travellers plan trips, compare options, manage bookings and get assistance during their stay, TechCrunch reports.

Why it matters

That puts AI in the travel-planning and booking process, not just the search box. The service is still a future launch, so travellers will have to wait to see what it can actually handle.

Discuss: Should an AI travel agent be allowed to manage bookings on a traveller’s behalf, or should it stop at making recommendations?

    Update What changed

Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky says the planned travel agent will be built specifically for travel, rather than adapted from a general-purpose chatbot.

Its interface is designed to generate maps, photos and itineraries dynamically. That could make trip planning feel more like assembling a visual plan than working through a text conversation.

The distinction matters: Airbnb is pitching an AI tool that shapes how travel options are presented, not just one that answers questions. The agent is planned for the first half of 2027, so its usefulness will depend on how well those generated plans connect to real choices and bookings.

    Update What changed

Airbnb says its planned travel agent will use a personalised interface, rather than relying on a text-only chatbot. The company says it can assemble maps, photos, comparisons, calendars and itineraries from a library of hundreds of travel-specific components, choosing what to show in response to a guest’s question.

That puts discovery and comparison at the centre of the design. Airbnb chief executive Brian Chesky told analysts that planning a trip is different from booking a routine appointment, and said the company believes travellers want to browse and make decisions with their companions.

The agent is also intended to help after a booking: Airbnb says it will handle changes to reservations, payment issues, refunds and rebooking, as well as provide 24-hour safety support.
