A JED Foundation survey cited by Futurism found that 90% of 9–17-year-olds surveyed had used an AI chatbot. Of those respondents, 58% used AI for schoolwork and 57% said they turned to it when sad, stressed, lonely or overwhelmed.
Why it mattersThe survey also found that young people using AI while distressed were more likely to report poor mental health and a history of suicidal thoughts or attempts. The findings describe an association, not proof that AI use causes those outcomes. That makes the results a prompt for a careful conversation about where young people seek support, not a verdict on chatbots as a cause.
Discuss: Should AI companies be expected to build stronger support pathways for young users, or is that responsibility better placed with families and schools?
