OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI has announced a National Community Compact setting out promises for communities near its planned AI infrastructure, including paying for its own energy and reporting on expected local jobs. The proposal lands as resistance to data-centre development grows, but it is a set of company commitments, not evidence that local concerns have been resolved.
Why it mattersWhat happened The National reports that OpenAI’s compact promises to protect local resources, alert communities to the company’s impact and publish reports on the jobs it expects to create in each area. OpenAI also says it will not use non-disclosure agreements with public officials, except for narrow protections covering security information and trade secrets or commercially sensitive material. The compact refers to “compute campuses” rather than specifically to data centres, the report notes. It does not establish how the promises will be implemented or measured. Why it matters
Discuss: Should AI developers have to meet enforceable local obligations before building, or are public commitments a reasonable first step?
