South Korea’s KOSPI fell 4.47% by late Friday morning, after the exchange briefly halted trading when the index plunged more than 8%. Yonhap, in a report carried by The Korea Times, linked the sell-off to investor concerns that US election results could slow data-centre construction.
Why it mattersChipmakers Samsung Electronics and SK hynix were down more than 3% and 6% respectively. A Kiwoom Securities analyst cited Texas’s share of US data-centre construction as a reason restrictions there could have wider effects. This is a market reaction to a possible policy shift, not proof that construction will slow. Still, the wobble shows how quickly political concerns about AI infrastructure can reach chip shares.
Discuss: Should governments treat market warnings as a reason to rethink data-centre rules, or keep investment moving unless a slowdown is actually demonstrated?
