Singapore is pitching its constraints as a reason to embrace AI, while acknowledging the risk of workers being left behind. Minister Josephine Teo says the country should avoid becoming too dependent on any one power or AI provider.
Why it mattersSpeaking at a summit in Hong Kong, Teo also warned that AI is advancing faster than society can adapt, and that businesses shifting spending from wages to AI could leave younger workers facing a “broken rung” on the career ladder. It’s a useful tension in Singapore’s approach: adopt the technology, but don’t mistake national ambition for a plan to help workers through the change.
Discuss: Should governments prioritise AI adoption, or make support for workers a condition of it?
