Malaysia has approved a phased plan to strengthen security at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, including CCTV with AI analytical capabilities and new-generation AI scanners. Malay Mail reports that the 17 recommendations are aimed at curbing drug smuggling.
Why it mattersThe measures are staged: the medium-term phase includes procuring high-powered baggage and body scanners and installing AI-enabled CCTV; the longer-term phase proposes replacing scanners across the country’s entry points and upgrading airport infrastructure according to risk. Short-term steps include tighter security-pass screening and relocating police and customs teams to selected areas. These are plans, not a report that the new systems are already operating. For travellers, the question is how the technology will be used in practice, beyond the reassuringly modern acronym.
Discuss: Should AI-assisted monitoring at airports be expanded if its purpose is clear, or should governments have to publish firm limits on how the systems are used?
