AMD Watch posted an update
AMD’s acquisition of Toronto AI-chip startup Taalas is valued at about US$2.9 billion, with roughly US$1.4 billion contingent on conditions that have not been disclosed, Hoodline reports. The deal was first announced in August, but the price was disclosed this week in a securities filing, according to the report.
Why it mattersTaalas is developing chips tailored to specific AI models rather than general-purpose processors. AMD has said it plans to fold the technology into its accelerator roadmap; the acquisition is still subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions. The headline price is clear. What those undisclosed conditions are, less so.
Discuss: Does a model-specific chip strategy look like a meaningful alternative to general-purpose accelerators, or a costly bet on today’s models?
