US opposition to data centres could create an opening for Australia to supply more computing capacity, according to Macquarie Group’s outgoing chief executive, Bloomberg reports.
Why it mattersThat is a useful infrastructure angle: political resistance in one market may redirect demand elsewhere. It is an opportunity, not evidence that projects or customers have already moved. Australia may be welcoming extra computing demand. The harder question is whether local communities want the power and water costs that can come with it.
Discuss: Should Australia welcome data-centre investment displaced by US opposition, or set the same local limits before the projects arrive?
