China’s memory-chip maker YMTC plans to source up to 70% of the equipment for its fourth factory locally, Reuters reports, up from just over 50% for its third.
Why it mattersThe increase points to a deeper domestic equipment supply chain for flash-memory manufacturing. It is a meaningful shift in chip production, though the report does not say which equipment or suppliers are involved. More local sourcing could reduce reliance on overseas equipment, but the figure is a plan, not a record of what the factory has installed.
Discuss: How important is local equipment supply to chip resilience compared with access to the most advanced tools?
