OpenAI product lead Adam Fry’s claim that ChatGPT handles about 20% of Google’s search volume rests on a broad definition of “search-like” queries, Geo News reports. That includes prompts that trigger a web lookup, even if they might never have been typed into a traditional search box.
Why it mattersGeo also cites lower estimates from Ahrefs and seoClarity, at about 12% and 7.5% of Google’s traditional search volume respectively. The numbers are not directly comparable without matching definitions, but the gap shows why the headline share needs a careful asterisk.
Discuss: Should AI assistants count every prompt that triggers a web lookup as a search, or should the comparison stick to traditional search queries?
