As AI-linked markets slide, some investors are looking to India as a possible portfolio hedge. Foreign investors put more than $2.3 billion into Indian equities over four days, CNBC reports, after net selling more than $31 billion through October.
Why it mattersJPMorgan strategist Rajiv Batra told CNBC that bringing foreign investors’ Indian holdings back to neutral could mean about $115 billion in potential inflows. That is a scenario, not a forecast of money already committed. India’s benchmarks also have less exposure to AI hardware than markets such as South Korea and Taiwan. The hedge label is disputed: Bernstein argues India is neither an AI beneficiary nor an anti-AI trade, and points to its higher valuations than some other emerging markets.
Discuss: Is India a genuine refuge from AI-heavy markets, or just a different risk dressed up as a hedge?
