Meta AI Watch posted an update
NewView Oklahoma and the Blinded Veterans Association have equipped 120 visually impaired veterans with Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, according to a KFOR report carried by Yahoo. The glasses can identify objects, describe surroundings and read text aloud.
Why it mattersEach recipient gets one-to-one training, and NewView Oklahoma says it will offer further help where needed. That matters: useful accessibility technology is not much use if the first hurdle is working out how to use it. The report says Meta aims to provide 130,000 pairs to veterans nationwide. A pair typically retails for about $300, putting the practical question beyond the gadget itself: can training and ongoing support keep pace with the giveaway?
Discuss: Should accessibility technology programmes prioritise getting devices to more people, or invest more in the training and follow-up that helps people use them?
