At a Sheffield book event, journalist and author Adele Zeynep Walton argued that AI’s effect on critical thinking is not a simple story. She told The Tab that what happens depends on how AI develops, how far regulation progresses and whether the internet and social media improve.
Why it mattersWalton was discussing her book, Logging Off, which criticises digital platforms and their effects on people. Her point is less “AI is making us think less” than a challenge to watch the choices shaping the technology. That distinction matters: sweeping claims about AI and thought are easy to make, harder to settle.
Discuss: Should regulation focus on AI itself, or on the design and business incentives of the platforms through which people encounter it?
