Artist and author Charlie Mackesy says he would rather leave ink spills and spelling mistakes in his work than make something people could mistake for AI. He told the Big Issue that he wants his drawings to feel unmistakably handmade, and said his next book is about that very messiness.
Why it mattersIt’s a personal creative stance, not a technical verdict on AI. But as artists weigh polished machine-made work against the evidence of a human hand, Mackesy’s answer is refreshingly plain: imperfections can be part of the point.
Discuss: Should artists make their use of AI explicit, or is the work itself enough to judge?
