AI tools are lowering the cost of making products and content, giving one-person companies something like a virtual team. But the founders’ industry knowledge and judgement may matter more than the tools themselves.
Why it mattersChina Daily reports that a new one-person-company track at the 2026 “Straight to Wuzhen” competition attracted more than 100 entrants. It also cites a white paper estimating China had over 16 million one-person companies as of June 2025. The catch: hardware, manufacturing and large industrial projects still need teams, and many businesses will need to grow beyond one founder. AI can help someone get started; it does not make every business a one-person job.
Discuss: Should AI make it easier for one-person businesses to compete with larger firms, or will the need to scale teams still decide who gets ahead?
