AI can widen access to powerful tools without widening who gets to shape them. Tram Anh Nguyen, chairwoman of Global Women in AI, argues that the real test is who can influence the systems and challenge their decisions.
Why it mattersNguyen points to women’s underrepresentation in AI leadership and to the growing role of AI in decisions about hiring, lending and risk. She calls for institutions to monitor models, build AI literacy and give people the authority to challenge automated recommendations. It’s a useful distinction: being able to use AI is not the same as having a voice in what it optimises for.
Discuss: Should organisations prioritise broader access to AI training, or give more people authority over how AI is designed and used?
