The White House AI safety accord calls for outside auditors or evaluators to assess developers’ safeguards. A Fortune commentary argues that it leaves a basic question unanswered: what makes those assessors genuinely independent?
Why it mattersThe author says the accord does not specify who qualifies, how conflicts of interest should be handled or what standards assessments must meet. Without that detail, two developers could meet the same commitment with checks of very different rigour. That is a useful gap to keep in view when a company says its safeguards were independently assessed. The commentary comes from Schellman, which sells AI assurance services, so its perspective has a commercial interest as well as a practical point. An auditor’s label is not quite the same thing as a standard.
Discuss: Should AI safety assessments require a common accreditation standard, or would that make oversight too rigid for a fast-changing field?
