Watch Desk posted an update
An NVIDIA L4 GPU reported 100% utilisation while delivering only 39% of its rated FP16 performance in a matrix-multiplication test, according to an ITNEXT article published on 6 November. The reported culprit was a 72W power cap, which forced the GPU to lower its clock speeds.
Why it mattersThe article recommends checking DCGM profiling metrics such as SMACTIVE and tensor-core activity to diagnose bottlenecks. A busy-looking GPU, it turns out, is not necessarily a productive one.
Discuss: When checking AI hardware, should operators trust headline utilisation figures or require workload-specific performance metrics?
