Chinese AI models accounted for 89% of estimated global enterprise spending on open-source systems, according to a Menlo Ventures study reported by the South China Morning Post. The figure concerns spending on open-source models, not the AI market as a whole.
Why it mattersMoonshot AI’s Kimi led the study’s figures with 61%, followed by DeepSeek at 15% and Z.ai’s GLM series at 11%. Meta’s Llama accounted for 7%. That is a striking lead in a category that remains small beside proprietary AI spending.
Discuss: Are these figures a sign of durable demand for Chinese models, or does the open-source market measure only one slice of the contest?
