AI-powered cameras off Xiamen are being used to monitor Chinese white dolphins, a nationally protected species, and help conservation teams target patrols, CGTN reports.
Why it mattersThe cameras can zoom and rotate remotely. CGTN says AI trained on collected data identifies dolphins and produces activity heat maps. The system has recorded more than 1,100 sighting locations and detected 210 individual sightings. That is a practical use of AI for wildlife monitoring, though the figures and claimed benefits come from CGTN’s account.
Discuss: Can AI-guided monitoring make conservation patrols more effective, or should the priority be more direct evidence of its impact?
