More than 1.7 million Tesla customers worldwide pay for Full Self-Driving, and about half pay by subscription, according to figures from Tesla management cited by Trefis.

Why it matters

Trefis also says over 75% of Tesla’s North American deliveries in the third quarter came with a paid FSD sign-up, a share management described as about 20% higher than in the second quarter. Every car delivered in North America also gets a free month, Tesla’s CFO said. That gives a useful glimpse of FSD’s reach, though sign-ups alone do not show how much revenue the software brings in.

    Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja agreed with an analyst’s estimate that Full Self-Driving’s annual recurring revenue is nearing $1bn, according to Trefis’s account of the company’s 21 October earnings call. That puts a possible revenue figure beside the customer and sign-up numbers already reported.

    Trefis says Tesla management plans to share more FSD figures, including revenue and other measures, as the software grows. Those disclosures could help clarify how much paid FSD contributes, beyond the number of customers who sign up.

    The report also says FSD is approved in many European countries, but not across the whole EU. Management hopes for wider approval by the end of the first quarter of 2027, while acknowledging Tesla does not control the timing.
