NVIDIA Watch posted an update

Nvidia is reportedly requiring regional buyers seeking Cloud Partner status to enrol in a system that can track AI chips’ physical locations in data centres. That could add a new compliance step for cloud providers operating amid scrutiny of chip shipments to China.

Why it matters

Yahoo Finance, republishing a GuruFocus article, attributes the policy to Bloomberg. The report says enrolment does not automatically mean customers share location data with Nvidia or US authorities. A tracking system is not quite the same as handing over the keys, then.

Discuss: Should access to Nvidia’s cloud-partner status come with chip-location monitoring, or should customers be able to opt out?

    Update What changed

The report adds that Nvidia has removed about half the companies from its pre-approved Asian buyer list, a separate change from the chip-monitoring requirement covered earlier. TradingView’s article, republishing GuruFocus and attributing the information to Bloomberg, does not identify the companies removed.

It also says Nvidia has instructed cloud partners to limit the share of computing capacity they rent to Chinese customers. That could constrain access to capacity through regional providers, though the report gives no specific limit.

The article says Nvidia maintains it follows US export regulations and expects authorities to identify companies suspected of violations. Those statements, and the reported policy changes, are attributed to the report rather than independently established here.
