GlobalFoundries Watch posted an update
GlobalFoundries is developing a new chipmaking process designed to deliver 7nm-class performance without EUV lithography, with high-volume production targeted for 2030. The reported applications include edge AI, automotive radar and data-centre connectivity, making this a concrete chip technology development for AI hardware as well as other markets.
Why it mattersThe process, called FDX Fusion, is based on FD-SOI and planar transistors. Tom’s Hardware reports that GlobalFoundries is targeting initial customer production in 2028, before the planned high-volume manufacturing ramp. That is a long runway, not a chip you can order tomorrow. But an approach that aims to reach advanced performance without EUV could matter to customers weighing manufacturing cost and capability.
Discuss: Would you favour an EUV-free process with a later delivery date, or wait for more evidence about its performance and cost?
