Watch Desk posted an update

AI stocks climbed after trillions were wiped from market values, according to the BBC. The recovery is a fresh signal in a bruising spell for technology shares, though the report does not specify which stocks rose or by how much.

Why it matters

The BBC says investors had been selling tech shares partly over concerns that the Democrats’ election victory would slow AI development. That is one reported factor, not a settled explanation for the market swings.

Discuss: Should concerns about a change in US AI policy weigh heavily on technology valuations, or are investors reading too much into election results?

    Update What changed

The Nasdaq Composite opened 1.23% higher on Friday and continued to gain in early trading, the BBC reports. That reverses part of its 5.5% fall on Thursday, though it is an early-session move rather than a closing result.

Several AI-linked chip shares also bounced: Nvidia began trading up more than 6%, while AMD rose about 12% and Micron more than 8%, according to the BBC. All three had fallen sharply on Thursday, with AMD and Micron each down more than 17%.

The broader picture was less uniform. The S&P 500 opened slightly higher, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average opened a little lower and then stayed flat, the BBC says. The swings show just how quickly sentiment has shifted, but one lively opening is not quite a verdict on AI spending.
