Anthropic Watch posted an update

Anthropic is building a serious presence in biotechnology, but scientists say turning promising lab results into approved medicines remains the hard part. The New York Post reports that the company has opened a biology lab, bought biotech startups and partnered with drugmakers.

Why it matters

The article says no drug developed by AI has yet received full US Food and Drug Administration approval. Khalifa University professor Andreas Bender argues that human clinical-trial evidence is the proof that matters; Vertex Pharmaceuticals’ executive chairman also describes unsuccessful attempts to find a working drug using AI companies. AI can help researchers, but biology is not a benchmark leaderboard. The distance between a promising experiment and a medicine that works in people is where the big claims have to earn their keep.

Discuss: What should count as convincing evidence that AI is advancing drug discovery: promising lab results, successful clinical trials, or something else?
