Veeam says Software Appliance virtual machines can intermittently fail to boot on certain AMD EPYC processors, including the 7262, 7302 and 7F72. The issue affects version 13.1 and later and can trigger a kernel panic during an early-boot FIPS-mode check.
Why it mattersVeeam’s advice, reported by BleepingComputer, is to redeploy the appliance on a host with an unaffected processor. If that is not possible, administrators should disable automatic updates and install updates manually while monitoring the reboot. If a kernel panic occurs, power off the VM and power it on again; a guest operating system restart will not recover it. Veeam says backup operations are not affected once the appliance boots successfully.
Discuss: Is it reasonable to expect a virtual appliance to work across processor hosts, or should administrators treat CPU compatibility as part of the deployment plan?
