OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI says it helps European start-ups build with its technology, even when its own products put the company in competition with them. Tricia Troth, who leads go-to-market for start-ups in EMEA, described that relationship as a source of “tension” as OpenAI moves into applications.
Why it mattersTroth pointed to legal-tech firm Legora: she said OpenAI worked with it on a legal plug-in despite launching its own legal product, Astra for Law. The company’s support can include engineering, model fine-tuning, marketing and introductions to investors and developers, according to Troth. That is a useful offer for founders, but it leaves the awkward question of how much room remains for an independent business when its platform provider also wants the customer.
Discuss: Can a start-up build a durable independent business on a platform whose owner is also launching competing products?
