Harwood, North Dakota, was the lone town among 47 US local referendums to vote against making large industrial developments, including data centres, harder to build, The Telegraph reports. Around 325 voters opposed the proposed restrictions, roughly three-quarters of those who turned out.
Why it mattersThe vote could matter for a planned $3bn Applied Digital development near the town. It is a striking counterpoint to the wider resistance, and a reminder that the AI infrastructure debate is being decided at local ballot boxes as well as in boardrooms.
Discuss: Should local communities be able to block data centres even when they underpin the AI industry, or should projects of this scale be decided at a broader level?
