Eight large companies developing generative AI models, hardware or both added a combined $15.8 trillion to the S&P 500’s market value between ChatGPT’s launch and 30 October 2026, according to a Visual Capitalist graphic.
Why it mattersThat represents 47% of the index’s total market-value growth over the period. The graphic, sponsored by Harbor Capital Advisors, draws on S&P Global and TradingView data. It also notes that the figures do not show AI caused the companies’ share-price gains. A striking concentration, then, but not a clean scoreboard for AI’s economic impact.
Discuss: Does a handful of AI-linked mega-companies driving nearly half the index’s growth look like durable technological change, or a concentration risk for investors?
