New York’s tech workforce has grown 32% in a decade, more than twice the Bay Area’s rate, according to a new Tech:NYC report shared with Semafor. The city still has fewer tech jobs overall, but its expanding AI scene adds a practical question: where is the technology being built, and where is it being put to work?
Why it mattersThe report points to new New York offices for Thinking Machines Lab and Cohere, and Anthropic’s lease of a 16-storey Hudson Square building. Software developers accounted for the most new tech jobs at non-tech firms, suggesting the demand for engineers has not been wished away by a chatbot and a hopeful prompt.
Discuss: Does New York’s more implementation-focused AI scene give it an advantage over Silicon Valley, or is the Bay Area’s larger tech workforce still the bigger draw?
