AWS says Cost Explorer and Cost and Usage Report 2.0 now spread the upfront fee for EC2 Capacity Blocks for ML across each reservation’s duration, rather than showing it all on purchase day.
Why it mattersTeams can see the amortised cost of instances and unused capacity, helping them allocate GPU costs to workloads and spot capacity they paid for but did not use. In CUR 2.0, the figures appear in the reservation amortised upfront fee and effective cost columns; in Cost Explorer, users can select the amortised cost view. The feature is available at no extra charge in AWS Regions, except GovCloud and China. That is useful accounting, though it will not make an idle GPU any less idle.
Discuss: Should cloud providers make this level of workload cost allocation standard, or is it useful only for teams with large reserved-capacity bills?
