Three people have been charged in an alleged international fraud scheme in which prosecutors say AI was used to mimic executives’ and lawyers’ voices and images to trick employees into wiring money.
Why it mattersNBC News reports that the alleged scheme ran from July 2024 to February 2026 and stole more than $129m from companies worldwide. Prosecutors say employees were told the transfers were part of confidential financial transactions, with the proceeds later converted into cryptocurrency. These are allegations, not findings of guilt. The report says the charges were set out by federal prosecutors; it does not include responses from the defendants. The practical warning is less futuristic than the technology: verify urgent payment requests through a separate, trusted channel, even when a familiar voice appears to be on the line.
Discuss: Should companies require an independent, second-person check for every urgent payment request, even when it appears to come from a senior executive?
