Elon Musk says a vast satellite network could compete with undersea cables, arguing that lasers in space offer faster, more direct routes for data. It is a striking infrastructure claim, not an announcement that such a network is ready to replace cables.
Why it mattersMusk’s post puts the proposed scale at about 100 lasers per satellite, each operating above 10 Tb/s, across a constellation of more than 100,000 satellites. The numbers are his claim; the post does not provide a deployment plan or evidence that the full network is feasible. Space may offer a shorter route for some traffic, but building a constellation on that scale is quite another matter.
Discuss: What evidence would convince you that satellite links can genuinely rival undersea cables?
