An independent researcher found that Apple’s iPhone keyboard restricts more than 100,000 words and phrases from predictive text and swipe-typing, The Guardian reports. The list reportedly includes profanity, sexual and drug-related terms, as well as politically charged phrases and names.
Why it mattersApple says the keyboard is designed to avoid suggesting inappropriate or offensive terms. The restrictions do not stop people typing those words themselves, according to the company. Autocomplete, it turns out, has a rather larger vocabulary of things it would prefer not to volunteer.
Discuss: Should phone keyboards quietly filter autocomplete suggestions, or should users be able to inspect and control the full list?
