The FAA is starting to replace four computer systems dating from the 1980s with a single digital platform for operational information and alerts, The Register reports. The agency plans to install the new system at 435 sites by the end of 2028.
Why it mattersFive locations are first in line: airports in Atlantic City, Nashville and Rochester, plus data-processing hubs in Atlanta and Salt Lake City. The FAA says the platform should improve how pilot reports and notices to airmen are collected and distributed. It is a substantial upgrade to working infrastructure, but the wider modernisation programme still faces a funding gap, according to The Register. The floppy disks may be on their way out; the timetable and the money still have to hold.
Discuss: Should the FAA prioritise replacing these legacy systems quickly, or wait until it can fund the wider overhaul properly?
