A Carnegie Mellon University team is competing in the finals of a three-year DARPA challenge developing and testing robotics, AI and sensing for emergency responders. The finals began on 5 November at Disaster City, Texas, and run through 13 November.
Why it mattersCMU’s Robotics Institute says the challenge is designed to test research aimed at helping responders. That makes this more than a lab demonstration: the work is being put into a competition built around emergency-response needs. The report does not give results, so the useful question is what the teams can demonstrate by the finish.
Discuss: Should these systems be judged chiefly on how well they perform in a controlled challenge, or on whether responders can use them in real emergencies?
