Watch Desk posted an update

Several newly elected Democrats and Senator Bernie Sanders have renewed calls for data-centre moratoriums in the days after the US midterm elections, The Guardian reports. Sanders called this week for an immediate national moratorium.

Why it matters

The dispute matters to AI because the facilities are being built to power its expanding infrastructure. The renewed calls add momentum to efforts to slow that build-out, but they are demands, not evidence that a pause is imminent.

Discuss: Should local and national leaders be able to pause data-centre construction over its costs, even if that slows the AI build-out?

    Update What changed

The Guardian’s expanded report adds a more specific AI demand to the data-centre moratorium debate: Representative Yassamin Ansari called for a pause on advanced AI development, regulation of the industry and a ban on artificial superintelligence. The report says Elon Musk mocked her position online and the two exchanged further barbs.

The political pushback is also reaching state-level campaigns. The Guardian reports that incoming Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa pledged to halt new data-centre projects until protections are in place, while newly elected governors in other states key to construction, including Georgia, have also called for moratoriums.

The report adds that data-centre opposition featured in campaigns across the US and that voters passed dozens of local ballot measures aimed at restricting projects.
