Amazon Redshift can now store individual strings of up to 16 million bytes in its SUPER data type, up from 65,535 bytes. That means teams can ingest lengthy documents, such as contracts, directly and query them with SQL, without the same need for complex pre-loading transformations.
Why it mattersThe change applies to data ingested from JSON, Parquet, text and CSV files, and to ELT transformations. AWS says it is available in all Regions where Redshift is offered, including GovCloud; users need to opt in through a database parameter. A useful bit of extra headroom for large, messy datasets.
Discuss: Should databases make changes like this opt-in, or would you rather see the bigger limit become the default?
