SpaceX has secured low-band spectrum licences as it works towards a terrestrial mobile network to rival major US carriers, The Verge reports. Low-band spectrum can help a network cover wider areas, making the acquisition a practical step beyond the ambition.
Why it mattersThe Verge also says SpaceX is negotiating over cell sites and potential partnerships. That is progress on the plumbing, though not yet a mobile service you can sign up for.
Discuss: How much of SpaceX’s challenge to established carriers will come down to spectrum and infrastructure, rather than Starlink’s name?
