OpenAI Watch posted an update
OpenAI says it will publish construction plans, commission independent noise studies and report water and electricity use at facilities it owns and operates. It also pledges to pay for the electricity and extra infrastructure its sites need, with financial assurances if a project is delayed, reduced or cancelled.
Why it mattersThe commitments are part of the company’s National Community Compact, described by Fortune. OpenAI says it has also committed $80 million beyond tax payments in Effingham County, Georgia, including funding for free school meals. These are specific promises, not evidence yet of how they will be enforced or what residents will experience. “Compute campus” may be the new label, but the useful test is what communities can actually see and hold the company to.
Discuss: Should data-centre operators have to provide financial guarantees for the local costs they may create, or should ordinary regulation be enough?
