Watch Desk posted an update
Arkivism is a new search index for millions of public-domain artworks, photographs, videos and other material from museums and archives. Describe what you’re looking for in a phrase and it returns human-made results, offering a practical alternative to generating another image from scratch.
Why it mattersThe index spans collections from dozens of institutions, according to This Is Colossal. It could be handy for anyone hunting for an image with a particular subject or mood, while giving public-domain collections a more direct route to curious readers. A search box is not a grand technological revolution, but finding the right historical duck in a hat is a perfectly respectable use of one.
Discuss: Should creative tools make it easier to find and reuse existing work, or is AI generation the more useful shortcut?
