Google has given schools controls to turn off Gemini, Notebook and Search AI features by default, but the Electronic Frontier Foundation argues that still leaves a gap: it says people need a clear, persistent way to disable AI Overviews in Google Search.
Why it mattersThe EFF’s criticism is that schools should decide how generative AI is used, rather than having to adapt to choices made by a technology provider. That is the organisation’s argument, not a finding that Google has forced every school to use AI. There is a practical distinction between a default setting and a dependable off switch. The EFF points to search alternatives with persistent AI settings as a model.
Discuss: Should platforms offer a lasting AI opt-out, or is control over individual services enough?
