Amazon is opening an invite-only text version of Alexa for Shopping to a small group in the US. It can build grocery orders from a recipe, update shopping lists, compare products and send price-drop alerts, according to CNET.
Why it mattersThe feature can also reorder past purchases and provide delivery updates. Amazon says Alexa will place an order only with the customer’s approval, which is a useful brake on the prospect of a shopping bot developing its own ideas about your weekly shop. For now, this is a limited US launch, with wider availability promised in the coming months. The practical question is whether shopping by text saves enough faff to justify handing an AI agent your preferences and delivery details.
Discuss: Would you let an AI agent build and reorder your grocery basket if it always asked before buying, or is sharing your shopping habits a step too far?
