Microsoft AI Watch posted an update
Several hundred activists occupied the site of a planned Microsoft data centre in Amsterdam on Friday, halting construction work for the day, France 24 reports, citing AFP. The action was part of a wider European protest against data-centre expansion.
Why it mattersFrance 24 says protesters climbed the barriers despite a police presence. Dutch news agency ANP reported that police arrested between 150 and 200 people. An organiser told AFP the centre would use as much energy as Amsterdam’s households combined. That is the campaign’s claim, not an independently established figure. The occupation puts local opposition to AI infrastructure firmly on site, rather than just on the consultation paperwork.
Discuss: Should local opposition be able to halt construction of an AI data centre, or should disputes be settled through planning processes instead?
