A Postgres outbox can be processed by concurrent workers polling a table, or by reading the write-ahead log (WAL) through logical replication. Milan Jovanović’s comparison finds the WAL approach delivers lower latency under high load.
Why it mattersThat speed comes with extra chores: managing a replication slot and cleaning up log data. Table workers, meanwhile, can scale using row-level locks. So the choice is not simply fast versus slow. It is lower latency in exchange for more operational machinery, a trade-off worth weighing before your transactional messages start queuing.
Discuss: For an outbox handling high message volumes, would you take lower latency with WAL and its extra maintenance, or stick with table workers?
