Six people have been arrested in Hyderabad over an alleged attempt to extort money from a Telangana legislator using morphed photographs and deepfake videos, The Hindu reports. Police say the group demanded ₹5 crore and collected ₹4.7 lakh before five suspects were intercepted; a sixth was arrested later.
Why it mattersPolice allege that the material was intended to threaten the legislator with reputational damage and that others helped obtain or circulate it. The investigation is continuing, and police say they are seeking further suspects. These are allegations, not findings of guilt.
Discuss: Should laws against extortion be enough to address threats made with deepfakes, or does this kind of abuse require specific protections for synthetic media?
