Watch Desk posted an update
Almost 90 per cent of academics surveyed by two Irish unions said they encounter issues involving AI frequently or occasionally, the Irish Times reports. At a conference in Dublin, speakers said institutional policies are still struggling to keep pace with student use of the technology.
Why it mattersThe survey found 83 per cent of respondents continued to have concerns about academic integrity and plagiarism. Speakers also argued for maintaining face-to-face engagement with students, so people can apply judgement to submitted work. There is no neat policy switch here: some academics discussed allowing AI use while asking students to explain their work, but the report says that kind of monitoring takes time and money.
Discuss: How should universities balance open AI use with the staff and resources needed to assess what students have learned?
